LOCAL MIAMI TV STATION INTERVIEWS LOCO.
JR- Jessica Ray- Interviewer
SM- Scott McCants- Interviewee
JR: And welcome back. Today, we have a special guest who first made it onto the scene here in local Miami with his high school basketball story. Lets take you back… It was March 14th, 2006. It was Long Beach versus Hill Cliff High School in Tampa Bay for the Florida High School State Championship. Miami was down 76-90 late in the fourth quarter. Scott McCants took the team on his shoulder. Take a look.
JR: He drove the ball past Latten Gray, and dunked home a basket to put the Sharks down by only 10.
JR: McCants, with 46 points already on 55 percent from the field, drives to the basket despite have 3 men on him and slams in the tying basket with only 15 seconds left.
JR: With seconds left, he would steal the ball and call a time out giving the Sharks possession of the ball. Here McCants talked over what the next play would be with coach Luke Ellen.
JR: They would inbound the pass to Gary Walker, who with 5 seconds left would alley-oop Scott McCants for the winning basket. All the NBA hype surrounding McCants went even crazier until a player from Hill Cliff pushed McCants off the dunk, hard onto the floor.
JR: He was taken to the area hospital where he broke some vertebra in his neck and back. After the injury basketball was on no ones mind and the NBA went their own way not wanting to get into the whole mess.
JR: But today we are joined by the man who despite all he had to come through just to make it big, he joined a new brand of basketball, a professional league in its own, the Pure Hoops League, we are joined my Scott McCants, welcome Scott.
SM: Thanks Jessica, its great to be here.
JR: Last time we had you here, we were talking to you about the State Championship you would be playing in, and now you made it big into a professional league. First, lets talk about the antics on the player from Hill Cliff.
SM: Well I see it this way, this kid was frustrated because we came from so far back firing on all cylinders and they were on cruise control. I mean we came out of nowhere and beat the guys. The guy does not changed my view on the school, coaches or anyone, he did the actions, not the school. What he did was senseless and foolish and gave high school basketball in the area a bad name.
JR: You gained MVP honors from the game and the whole state tournament. Lets talk about the affects of the injury where the NBA just basically didn’t want you.
SM: Yeah, that had to be the worse phone call I could have ever received. They called up and told me with the events that took place and the type of injury I sustained that it would be in my best interest not to declare myself in the upcoming draft. After that, I broke down and lost it. But with that call, I became a better person.
JR: How did you get noticed?
SM: Well to keep my basketball dream alive I went to open runs in Miami, and St.Petersburg. I played for about 5 months when a man came to me and said he was a PHL scout and wanted to talk to me. We went over to the bleachers and sat down and talked. He told me a career in basketball was possible and the injury was no problem. Right then, the NBA did not matter to me because this was my chance to go make a name for myself. So the next day I went to the local PHL office to sign all the paperwork and now I am officially in the league.
JR: They was a league in the league for draftees. There is a team Puma and a team Dada. You currently play for…
SM: Dada.
JR: Dada, and you played 5 games now, taking MVP n the first game with 34 points and 22 rebounds and the fifth game with 41 points and 20 rebounds.
SM: That was all my hard work over the last few months all thrown into one. I had been training and doing everything I could to get that opportunity. That game made my dreams fulfilled and more dream born.
JR: The next game was a hugh game , 40 points and 22 rebounds, the third 33 points and 11 rebounds, the fourth 29 points and 7 rebounds and then your player of the game performace.
SM: After the first game, I was dialed in. The basket, and winning was all that mattered to me. My teammates were a big part of my success in these 5 games, and after the draft we are going to be split up, but who knows.
JR: What are you set on now, like your goals.
SM: Well, beings drafted into the big show in PHL. I want to prove I am a great basketball player. I am not worried about money, television time or any of that, I just want my chance, my shot at the world of professional basketball, nothing else. If I ride the bench all season, if I play only 2 minutes is does not matter because that just make me feel 100 times better about myself that I proved to the NBA that I am beter then they are and that I can do anything.
JR: With the up-coming all-star break what are your plans?
SM: Well, I really hope I can get some tickets to the game and events to see what it is all about. Because in the future I reall hope to be apart of all the events.
JR: Will you go in the first round of the Pure Hoops League draft?
SM: In my mind, I just hope a go in any of the rounds, but deep down, first round would be nice. Maybe even top 2 or 3? Maybe we can all dream.
JR: Well that’s all the time we have, make sure you stop by and see us.
SM: No doubt, I will be back to see you all.
JR: Thanks, Scott
SM: No problem Jess.
