[shadow=blue,left,300]Matt "Lights Out" Robertson spotted at a Charity Event[/shadow]
By: DAVE HACKENBERG
Saturday:
Matt was sitting at the Toledo Rocket and Kansas Game as I approached him and asked "what’s such a big name player being here?" I said with a laugh. After taking a bite of his Hamburger he looked at me with a smile "enjoying the football game, what else?" After a little bit more of question he told me he would be participating in a Charity Putt-Putt match with some other athletic celebrities.
Matt told me after his Columbus Dispatch article that he got a call and it was Toledo’s Mayor, Carty Finkbeiner, asking me if I would be interested in helping public schools around Toledo, and of course I said sure and asked what we would be doing and who else. He told me it would be a putt-putt match with Chester Taylor, a former Toledo Rocket Tail Back now playing with the Minnesota Vikes. Kypros Charalambous, how is the father of the late Haris Charalambous ,the basketball player who died on the practice court, and then Bruce Gradkowski, the quarter back from Toledo who is now on the TB Bucs.
Matt handed me a Pass to get into the Charity Event and with a wink walked off to the bathroom.
Sunday:
I arrive at the Putt Putt course and signs are hanging everywhere welcoming everyone to Toledo. I take my pass over to the door and show the guard and he lets me in. I look around smelling all the food and spot Bruce Chester and Matt in the corner chatting. I walk over to them and strike up a conversation of course they are talking trash to each other but in sport. Chester says he has been practicing for this match all summer and he says that Bruce and Matt are going down. I asked where Kypros was and they informed that he would not be participating.
A man walked over with a microphone and told everyone to shut up and described the rules
13 Holes
All Par 3’s
Every Hole In one would be 5,000 dollars to add to charity
1st place got 20,000 dollars to their favorite Chairty
2nd place got 13,000 Dollars
And 3rd place getting 9,000 Dollars
He also said the order would be Bruce, Chester, and Matt.
Bruce walks up to the first hole and places his red ball onto the mat and swings back and solidly hitting the ball the ball whips off the putter hitting the back end of the cup but going over and ending in the corner. Chester comes up next and hits it more softly but it doesn’t even come close. Matt walks up and places a ball about 1 foot away from the Hole.
Score after 1st Hole
Bruce-Par
Chester- +1
Matt- -1
I’m going to transfer to the 10th hole where things go to heat up
Scores going into the 10th hole
Bruce: -8
Chester: - 5
Matt: -9
As you can see its still a 3 horse race. Bruce comes up to the hole and hit’s a nice shot laying about 2 feet away from the hole. Chester walks up but hit’s the ball to hard and it ends up in the pond behind the hole giving him a + 2 Pentaly. Matt walks up and hit’s a bad ball leaving it with a hill to go over and about 14 feet. Bruce its his in to give him a birdie. Matt has to 2 shot it to save Par.
Bruce: -9
Chester: -2
Matt: -9
Lets go to the 13th hole
Bruce: -13
Chester: -3
Matt: -12
Matt comes into the hole down by one.
Bruce steps up onto the course and sends a beautiful shot that lands about 1 foot away from the hole. He knocks it in giving him a -1. Chester comes up and gets a par. Matt comes up needing a Hole In One to Tie Bruce. Matt brings back his putter and softly hit’s the ball the ball gets up to the cup rolls around it for a second but then falls out and giving the title to Bruce.
Bruce shakes hands with Matt and giving him a hug saying he will get him next time.
Bruce said to me “it’s a great honor to win the first Putt-Putt inivational in Toledo and I hope we do it again next year
Money:
Chester-9,000 To His Charity
Matt-23,000 To His
Bruce-35,000 To His
This is Dave Hackenberg, happy putting.
